There is a wealth of directories out there on the web some good and some not so good.
People think if a web directory has a good Pagerank then that’s the only reason you should consider submitting to it. You should always weight this up; if the directory has a good usable layout then you should consider it regardless on their Pagerank.
It’s a good strategy to submit to young directories as most directories start of free and then start charging when they get more popular. Don't be distracted by thinking that just because the directory has some good websites listed in it; it means it's regarded as a good directory.
Directory owners often put entries in the directory themselves to make it look like it's more popular with bigger websites. There of course is nothing wrong with this as young directories struggle to get noticed and this can help gain popularity but it’s a thing to look out for.
Another thing to look out for is the nofollow rule, some directories will place a nofollow rule on their links, which means when the search engines spider the directory it's told to not follow the link which in turn won't help your SEO efforts at all.
